Sheikh Suhaim was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs for the State of Qatar in 1972. He served until his death on 21 August 1985. He had a great deal of participation, particularly in political, humanitarian, social and cultural activities. In 1985, he plotted a coup against Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, who his brother and the ruler of Qatar, after he learned that Khalifa had named his own son, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, as the heir apparent.〔 ''Public domain''〕 He had his own cache of weapons and maintained a cadre of supporters in northern Qatar. After Suhaim died suddenly of a heart attack in August 1985, his sons blamed Ghanim Al-Kuwari, the Minister of Information and Culture, for not responding promptly to his calls for medical attention. They were imprisoned after they attempted to assassinate Al-Kuwari.〔
